How long should a suppository help?

I'm showing symptoms of hemorrhoids inside me and decided to try using Preparation H suppositories, but the first one I used I still had a lot of pain when I had a bowel movement. Then, the next I I have not had a bowel movement until the next day and it was still very painful and there was a little blood. Is this the suppository does not work, or is it just take longer?
